| Rat in Fulton Street Subway Station |
May 3, 2000 |
I was standing on the subway platform when I heard squeals coming from a pile of trash bags (it appears to be normal operating procedure for the MTA to leave bags of trash on subway platforms).
I walked toward the bags of trash. As I got closer, it looked like the bags were alive and squirming like a pile of maggots. Suddenly, I heard shriek come from the bags, and about half a dozen rats came scurrying out.
The rats were moving very quickly, and that is why the photo is a little blurry.

Please Tell Me That Isn't What I Think It Is (contribution and commentary by Litter Bugged) |
May 3, 2000 |
Hi FM Staff,
I wish I could say that this was not a common site, but unfortunately I cannot. I guess the lack of public facilities was a larger problem for this individual than for the average commuter.
If the FM webmaster elects not to post these photos I certainly understand.
Location: 2nd Avenue F Train station in lower Manhattan. Rear of Brooklyn bound platform. Date: April 15, 2000
Photo angle 2 follows.

FilthyMess Webmaster's Note: I was undecided as to whether or not to post Litter Bugged's grisly photos, but I decided to post them for the following reasons:
| 1. |
Although disturbing, this is the reality of the New York Subway system, and there is no reason to sugar coat this filthy mess. |
| 2. |
If this is tolerable in real life, it should be tolerable online. If you think this is intolerable, then why must people live with conditions such as this? |
| 3. |
Litter Bugged took the trouble to photograph the scene and submit it, so I think it should be displayed. |
| 4. |
If this is not the definition of filthy mess, then I don't know what is. |
