| Piles of Scrap Wood Along Metro-North Tracks |
Nov. 8, 1999 |
This picture was taken from a Metro-North train in the Bronx.
Not only is this an eye sore, but note that the waste wood is pretty close to fenced-in electrical transformers.
Metro-North uses sections of its right of way property to store waste. A few years ago, commuters endured a delay of several hours as firefighters tried to put out a Metro-North scrap wood fire.
Here is another picture of poorly maintained areas along Metro-North's tracks.

| Graffiti at Rye Station |
Nov. 8, 1999 |
This is a passageway in the Metro-North station at Rye, New York.
Note that this isn't fresh spray paint, so this visual pollution has been tolerated for some time.
Another point of interest is the fact that part of the tunnel is painted sky blue, and an attempt is made to keep that portion of the tunnel graffiti-free. I can only speculate that the blue portion of the tunnel is maintained by Metro-North, and the defaced portion of the tunnel is the responsibility of the City of Rye. If anyone has any information on why half of the tunnel is maintained while the other half isn't, let us know on the Message Board.

| Used Bubble Gum Collection at 42nd Street Station |
Nov. 8, 1999 |
Question: Why don't you see gum stains like this at Disney World?
Answer: Because Disney World is a profit-oriented, customer service-focused organization. If Disney does not maintain a clean, safe facility, people will not attend Disney parks. The New York City Subway system is a different story, and this picture tells the tale.
