Why No Recycling Bins in Subway Stations? Oct. 25, 1999

I noticed this open trash container one morning in a subway station. The fact that it seems to be full of newspapers raises a question: Why are there no recycling bins in subway stations?

Residents of the city can be fined for not separating recyclables from their trash, but it is "anything goes" in the MTA New York City Transit domain.

Just to show how it can be different, check out how some Metro-North Railroad stations manage recycling bins.
