litter on Metro North tracks in Grand Central Terminal
Metro North Tracks in Grand Central Terminal Oct. 25, 1999

There are two points of interest here:

1. The Metro North tracks in Grand Central are not kept particularly clean dispite fares that are generally over $5 per trip for a 20 mile ride.
2. Those pieces of paper you see in the picture are actually handbills to promote Grand Central Terminal.

exposed garbage bags in subway station
Trash on 51st Street Subway Platform Oct. 25, 1999

And they wonder why they have a problem with rats.

Do you see that black dumpster at the end of the column of trash bags? Well, the trash is supposed to be enclosed in there. You see, the dumpster is an enclosed space designed to keep the trash in, and to keep vermin out.

I cannot figure out why the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) has such a hard time managing trash. You never see this kind of thing at airports... If airports can manage their trash, why does the MTA have such a difficult time with subway stations?

dirty subway car in New York
Pizza Crusts and More in Subway Car Oct. 25, 1999

If you are going to bother to bring your meal down into the subway, why don't you just bother to dispose of your trash in a receptacle when you are done?

Sometimes a flithymess is the plain result of inconsiderate or contemptuous individuals.
