abandoned car in Queens with parking tickets
Meter Maid Keeps on Ticketing Abondoned Car in Queens Oct. 25, 1999

Let us count the signs of abandonment:
1. Open gas tank door with missing gas cap
2. Flat tire
3. Broken window with stripped interior
4. Missing license plates
5. No windshield wiper blades
6. The half-dozen parking tickets previously issued

Obviously, agents of NYC are aware that this car is abandoned, but instead of calling in a tow truck, they keep issuing tickets... I guess it helps them reach their ticketing quota with little effort.

Sometimes there appears to be very little differentiating NYC from third-world corruptocracies.

scratchiti - scratched glass on subway car
Scratchiti Oct. 25, 1999

This example would fit well in our Public Transport category, but I placed it here because I think it is indicitive of a larger contempt for common property.

Because the authorities have made it harder to spray paint graffiti on subway cars, some attention-seekers have taken to using sharp objects and abrasive materials on the coated glass on subway windows.

I guess some might argue that scratchiti is art... Make your voice heard on our Message Board.

free circulars box full of trash in Rye, NY
Using a Pamphlet Vending Box as a Trash Receptacle Oct. 25, 1999

This is a pamphlet vending box at the train station in Rye, a suburb of New York, in Westchester County.

I checked this box for a couple of weeks before taking a picture of the mess... It appears that the box is abandoned, and no one takes responsibility for the filth that is dumped in it.
